As educators, we know the importance of literacy development from an early age. Our teachers guide and encourage students as they begin the process of learning to read in the primary grades and subsequently transition to reading to learn at the intermediate and secondary level. Students are assessed at a minimum of three times annually to determine reading levels and abilities. This information is used to direct lesson planning in the classroom, monitor student progress, and establish intervention and enrichment reading groups. The Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System is the tool utilized to determine students’ Independent and Instructional reading levels based on their reading accuracy and comprehension. Students are also assessed in Reading and Mathematics with AimsWeb Plus to ensure they are meeting grade level goals and making progress through the duration of the year.
